More explosions and roadside bombs today. Then, a quick break for the internet cafe! Big day tomorrow-get out and vote, everyone.

Some of my guys got hit by a roadside bomb. This is a normal conversation now, to compare our IED attacks and make notes.

The phyics are interesting-you get the smoke and the metal hitting all around you before you actually hear the sound of the explosion. If you hear the explosion-you know you made it through ok. Wiggle the hands and feet to make sure you have all the parts.

Anyway, sometimes my friends ask me about the boredom combined wiht the danger and how people avoid from going crazy. We're all crazy in some ways out here. If they really only knew the stories I could tell. That's just the way it is.

you know i had a fairly esoteric conversation with one of buddies about cakes and pies. and how, when faced with the option of cake or pie, one must truly examine the meaning of life. and when one can truly that question, then one can truly decided between cake or pie. then again we were drunk. but still, keep your head down and keep your powder dry.

Me, I'd probably choose cake if it came with ice cream. But I do love pumpkin pie. So, like my ethics, it's situational. :-)

KATE

Which totally reminds me, here is the recipe you and Beachgirl asked for:

Homemade butterscotch pie:

Make your homemade crust FIRST - and it must be homemade, because all those frozen ones are shite.

Then, make the following:

6 Tablespoons Flour
dash of salt
1/2 Cup Butter
1 Teaspoon vanilla
1 and 1/3 Cups brown sugar
2 Cups REGULAR (don't use skim, it will be horrid!) milk
3 beaten egg yolks (just the yolks!)

Mix flour, salt and sugar; add milk slowly. Add butter and cook until thick. Add egg and vanilla and cook another 2 minutes. Cover with merange (or not, depends on your taste) and brown in oven.

As for heat/temps . . . whatever. I always use medium heat when making the filling and then "brown in oven" at 375, but who knows if it would be better another way.

no icing?! icing is the only reason to eat cake - so you're not a total pig and just eat it out of the container (at least when you're in the company of others). cake is just the necessary vehicle for getting that blessed icing in your mouth in the first place. I luv ya Meg but no icing? blasphemous.

So sorry, Lizzie, but it's just TOO sweet for me.

I have to have something to cut the flavor. Cake alone isn't so sweet. :(
